How To Choose The Right University Degree

by Tanya March 28, 2022

Choosing the right university degree is important.

You are choosing a path to your future profession while investing a lot of money along the way.

Self-awareness is an essential skill in picking the right university degree.

When making this decision, consider your present self and your future self. Humans evolve, and so do their values, marital status, and outlook on life.

Also, keep in mind that the generation you are born into can significantly affect your career opportunities and progression.

Millennials are known to seek wider meaning in their job beyond making money. Millennials & Gen Z are also the most entrepreneurially-minded generation ever.

Below are 5 essential factors you should consider when choosing a degree:

1. Personality: are you an extrovert or an introvert?

Personality is one human quality that can stay consistent throughout one’s life.

If you are an extrovert who enjoys interacting with people in social settings, you will always be that person.

Such people will find themselves happier and more fulfilled in psychology, business management, social work, or entertainment.

You can take the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) personality test to understand yourself better.

The test has 16 personality types, and each one has its own set of strengths and weaknesses.

A career-based MBTI test can return a list of professions most applicable to your personality. You can then browse through a list of UK degrees that will be most suitable for your character.

2. Ask yourself: how do you want to spend your days?

You probably have a million things you enjoy doing. But where do you start? How do you pick a a degree to dedicate your time to?

Try answering this question to figure it out:

“How would you want to fill your days?”

You can’t be a writer if you don’t want your days to be filled with writing.

You can’t be a coach or a presenter if you can’t hold a conversation.

Freelancing isn’t the right path if you hate communicating with clients.

Sometimes we fall in love with the glory or the destination of the profession but aren’t interested in taking the road to get there.

You gotta love the journey.

3. Types of course content

With the results from Myer’s test, you should already know whether you prefer working with words or numbers.

You can then look at the list of core modules of each degree to find out which of them are interesting enough to keep your enthusiasm and attention not just for three to four years, but for the rest of your life.

4. Academic reputation of the university

There are many universities that offer the same degree.

The decision you make should depend on the institution’s academic reputation and its recognition in the field of study.

Some universities receive high recognition in research and development of the field, coming up with techniques and academic models. Others are more recognized for applying these techniques; these are likely to be technical colleges.

Knowing which institution is more focused on theory or the technical application of the idea is crucial as it will help you choose a course that aligns with your personality.

5. Employability after graduation

Check the number of available jobs in the field you want to study. This determines your employability.

Look what level of education is required by most employers. Will a bachelor’s degree be enough, or do you need to further your education to post-graduate studies like honor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. level?

Choosing a degree is often very exciting. Be sure to conduct thorough research into each field and its requirements before deciding what to study.
