How Do Teeth Affect Our Confidence?

by Tanya October 21, 2024

When I was younger, my relationship with oral hygiene was complicated. I didn’t exactly have the best habits, and my diet was full of sugary foods and drinks.

To top it off, my front teeth were crowded, and I ended up with braces for three long years. Now, during that time, I wasn’t the best at brushing or flossing—my teenage self just didn’t see the point.

When the braces finally came off, my teeth were left with decalcified spots, those unsightly white and brown patches caused by plaque and bacteria. I remember feeling so self-conscious that I rarely smiled.

Looking back, I realised my childhood dentist never really explained the importance of proper brushing and flossing, or regular dental checks.

How do teeth affect our confidence?

Although teeth are one of the minor parts of appearance, having good-looking teeth can give you more confidence in your personal and professional life. Confidence leads to success.

A gorgeous white smile can make you feel more social without any inhibitions and create a first good impression.

Anxiety about your teeth can prompt you to avoid social situations or be anxious in a business context.

For professionals, especially Gen Z working in fields like technology, marketing, and hospitality, appearance is crucial for networking, presentations, and direct customer interactions.

So after graduating, I saved up enough money to do teeth whitening, my confidence shot up, and people started saying I looked happier.

Your smile shouldn’t be a source of shame

Your smile shouldn’t be the reason you don’t speak up or hold back in social situations.

We’ve all had moments where someone’s comment or a look made us feel insecure, but that doesn’t mean we need to accept it as the truth.

Confidence should never be tied to something as fixable as oral health. It’s not about having a “perfect” smile; it’s about feeling good in your skin.

For Millennials facing financial pressures like student debt and housing costs, taking care of their teeth now can help avoid expensive treatments in the future. Additionally, maintaining oral health prevents missed work due to dental problems, ensuring consistent productivity and focus on career goals.

And the good news? There are simple ways to take care of your oral health. Here’s how:

* Brush regularly, but not aggressively.
* Use fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss daily.
* Visit your dentist at least once a year.
* Avoid smoking.
* Consider using a mouthwash.
* Limit sugary foods and starches.
* Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
* Switch to a soft-bristled brush.
* Start by brushing the back teeth first.
* Incorporate mouthwash and gum into your routine.
* Record a video selfie to monitor your brushing technique.

If you’re worried or unsure, reach out to a professional who can guide you. Remember, it’s not about chasing perfection but maintaining health and confidence. A little care goes a long way, and when you feel good about your smile, it shows in everything you do.
