Make Your Outdoor Space Feel Like Home (Without Spending A Fortune)

by Tanya March 26, 2025

When designing an outdoor space, the goal is pretty simple: make it feel less like a garden and more like your favorite room—just without the roof (or walls, ideally).

You don’t have to have acres of land or a massive budget, just a vision of turning your modest backyard into a proper extension of your cozy living room.

Here’s what you can do:

1. Blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor

You can match your outdoor flooring to your indoor living room floor, choosing the same finish. Instant seamless transition—easy peasy.

You can install big bi-fold doors, which opened the living room right out into the garden, making both spaces feel like one.

2. Comfortable and durable furniture

Outdoor furniture doesn’t have to be cold metal or stiff plastic. Opt for weather-resistant sofas loaded with comfy cushions and soft outdoor rugs underfoot.

A little firepit is the perfect focal point for chilly evenings. Remember, if it’s comfy, you’ll use it.

Teak wood outdoor furniture is astonishingly durable, thanks to its naturally high oil content and resistance to moisture and UV damage, meaning you can leave it outside in the harshest weather. So you’ll be able to enjoy your garden for years, if not decades, ahead – you could even take it with you if you decide to move.

You don’t have to do much at all in the way of upkeep for teak to stay looking its glorious best, and it’s easy to clean. Its rich, golden-brown colour and gorgeous grain pattern add elegance to any outdoor space, while this appearance only improves over time as a silvery grey patina develops over the hardwood.

3. Light it up (but keep it chill)

Forget harsh floodlights— go for strings of twinkly lights and a couple of rustic lanterns to keep things cozy and inviting. Lighting is your best friend for creating atmosphere without breaking the bank.

4. Clever zones for functionality or office

You can divide the garden into clear areas: a small outdoor kitchen (if you genuinely love a BBQ), a cozy dining area, and a chilled-out lounge spot. Clearly defined zones mean no wasted space and maximum usability.

Bespoke garden offices can increase property value, not just provide you with a dedicated workspace that’s separate from all the inevitable distractions of your main house.

A garden office offers a great separation between work and play/home time.

There’s something about being under the sky that boosts our physical and mental health

5. Add greenery and shade

A simple pergola with climbing plants gives space some shade and a lovely airy feel. It doesn’t need to be complicated; a touch of greenery goes a long way in making a space feel relaxing and inviting.

Most importantly,

But here’s a massive tip: before you dive into Pinterest and end up with a hot tub you’ll never use (been there), ask yourself: “How do I actually want to use this space?” Entertaining friends? Growing veggies? Or simply having somewhere calm to sip your morning brew?

And think practically too—pets, maintenance, climate. I nearly blew £20K enclosing my porch in the sweaty Southern summers. Instead, I got two outdoor ceiling fans for a fraction of the cost, making the porch usable all summer and blissfully mosquito-free. Result!

Bottom line: design your outdoor space around how you’ll actually live, not what the glossy mags tell you to buy. Keep it comfy, keep it practical, keep it you.
