Restoration

When impacts cannot be fully avoided or minimised, the third step is to restore the affected environment. This could include rehabilitating disturbed areas, replanting vegetation, or restoring ecosystems to their original condition as much as possible.

Ideally, you’d restore the environment to its original state. This involves more than just planting a few trees and moving on to the next project, it’s about genuinely rehabilitating ecosystems and ensuring they can thrive again.

Offsetting

The final step, used only when impacts remain after avoidance, minimisation, and restoration, is to offset or compensate for the residual impacts.

This often involves creating or improving a similar habitat elsewhere, or providing compensatory measures to affected communities.

This could mean creating or protecting habitats that are ecologically similar to the ones affected by your operations. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than leaving the damage unaddressed.
