6 Space-Saving Tips For a Small Apartment

by Tanya June 30, 2022

Owning a home is becoming increasingly expensive, so Millennials are finding creative ways to transform even the tiniest of spaces into comfortable living places.

With the many benefits associated with small space living (i.e., low maintenance, cheaper rent, etc.), the major disadvantage is the lack of space.

So, if you’re living in a tiny apartment or shoebox home, here are 4 simple tips to help you to make the most of your space:

1. Use built-in furniture

The good thing about built-in furniture is more space. Many small apartments come with in-built furniture such as wardrobes, kitchen islands, countertops, etc.

If you share a small apartment with a flatmate, you can turn your kitchen countertop into an improvised dining table so you wouldn’t need extra furniture. All you will need are a couple of high stools, and you’re good to go.

Find lots of multi-use furniture ideas on Pinterest that can help to maximise your space.

Look for items such as a dining table that can fold completely down, an ottoman bed that has storage, and even a sofa bed if you live in a studio flat. These can all give you a lot more room without compromising on comfort or style.

2. Learn to live with less

If your home doesn’t have enough space, un can declutter and get rid of unwanted things. Or you could put your possessions into storage. Cinch self-storage offers a wide range of storage units for personal and business use. It’s mostly cheaper to pay for a monthly storage unit than to find a bigger apartment.

If you play a lot of sports, you can find Sports equipment storage units that can hold everything from your lacrosse sticks to your golf club sets. By putting things in storage you are saving them from cluttering up your flat, while also saving on money. You could also choose a storage unit close to the place where you will need the items, such as your local gym or sports field.

3. Don’t buy things you don’t need

You have to resist the urge to buy the stuff you don’t really need if you live in a small apartment. The small things can pile up over time.

So, think twice before buying those extra pairs of shoes or that bag you don’t plan on using anytime soon. Do you have a lot of stuff that you need to get rid of or sell? If you live in the UK, I would recommend hiring a Kettering van and man company who can transport your belongings from A-B anywhere in the UK safely and cheaply.

Oxford Movers are great if you live or move from Oxfordshire.

4. Make use of wall shelves

One of the best ways to save space and keep a small apartment organized is building wall shelves. Wall shelves help to keep your living space organized by giving you a place to keep those small-sized possessions that you keep misplacing.

They can also be used to keep your books well organized. Another advantage of wall shelves is the fact that they can be used for decorative purposes.

5. Make home a stress-free space

In order to fight stress, you have to distance yourself from any source of stress. Start by creating a stress-reducing home of your own; transform your house so that it’s a place where you relax, enjoy yourself and recharge your batteries.

One way of naturally reducing your stress is by ensuring that your home has enough fresh air. After some time, the air becomes stale and your body and brain slow down due to the lack of oxygen. If you ventilate the windows several times during the day, your home will get enough fresh air to get you through the day.

Another thing that could cause stress is the lack of lighting. If you think living in a bat cave is cool, think again for not only is it not healthy, but it’s also very depressing and stressful.

6. Seek professional help

If you are moving into a small apartment or planning to build a tiny house yourself,  seek professional help. Scenario Architecture, for example, delivers ambitious living spaces for people looking to make use of space creatively.

If you are a family or a couple, I would highly recommend working with architects. They will help you to design your small space in a way that it feels big and stylish.
