Personal Branding: The Secret To Career Success

by Tanya June 23, 2023

Personal branding is a powerful tool for individuals seeking to attract (not seek) opportunities.

Gone are the days when a well-crafted resume and a few professional connections were enough to secure a dream job.

In the digital age, where information travels at lightning speed and opportunities abound, it is essential to stand out from the crowd and establish a unique personal brand.

What is personal branding

Personal branding is a process of managing and promoting your image.

It involves defining who you are, what you stand for, and what sets you apart from others.

Your personal brand is a combination of your skills, experiences, values, and the way you present yourself to the world.

It is the essence of what makes you valuable as a talent/personality or an employee.

How to build a personal brand

Building a personal brand requires a strategic approach.

It starts with self-reflection and a deep understanding of your strengths, passions, and goals.

Ask yourself: What do I want to be known for? What expertise or skills do I possess that can add value to others? What makes me stand out from my peers?

Come up with your own philosophy or mantra

Do some research and see how other people brand themselves in your area.

Then learn from them, but add your own twist or delivery to your content (it’s pointless to do exactly the same thing twice).

Your personal philosophy ( a mantra you live by) should be something that people can easily understand and relate to.

For example, Jordan Syatt –  my favourite personal trainer on Instagram, knows how difficult it is to stick to a fitness regime long-term, which is why he emphasizes consistency over perfection.

His mantra is: “Consistency over perfection”.

His philosophy is: You can’t be consistent if you don’t enjoy it.

Jordan is all about fun workouts, not being too strict with diet, and enjoying life and pizza.

That’s something we all can get on board with 🙂

Having a focused theme and messaging will help you find your crowd quicker and keep away people, who wouldn’t align with your offering anyway.

Create authentic content online

Shallow self-indulgent content doesn’t sell.

Creative storytelling and integrity result in far more quality leads and makes the job much more enjoyable.

We want to be inspired and educated, not promoted or sold to.

Embrace your individuality and let your true self shine through in every interaction and piece of content you produce.

Create educational content in a fun format

Astounding educational content sells, because humans are inherently curious.

But to succeed, you need to be consistent.

Consistency breeds familiarity, and the more people recognize and remember you, the stronger your personal brand becomes.

The fun format can be a video, a commentary, or imagery – pick your format and stick to it.

Dress the part

People judge you on your looks, there’s no way around it.

So dress like the person you want to be.

This doesn’t have to cost the earth, but it takes some planning and sourcing.

If you have the funds, getting some properly tailored business attire can be an invaluable attribute for your personal branding.

Show your personality

Confident people don’t hide their personalities.

The days of safe ‘suit-and-tie branding ‘on social media are over.

People that shine today aren’t afraid to take the risk of looking vulnerable, real or funny to remind followers that there’s a human being behind their account.

There are little touches you can add to your personal branding that can make a massive difference in showcasing your character and personality. Whether it’s a cheeky – but appropriate – joke in your CV or a bold interview outfit, it’s important to show who your brand represents. Another fun option could be in decking out your vehicle – a private number plate like the options from Regtransfers can be a fun way to make your entrance memorable.

Speak at events (don’t just attend them)

Speaking at events offers several advantages over simply attending networking events and handing out business cards.

When you speak, you immediately position yourself as an expert in your area, so you cut down time speaking to people one-on-one.

Also, as a speaker you have an opportunity to get 100+ peoples’ undivided attention for 30min-1h – that’s massive.

This positions you as an expert in your industry, making it more likely for people to seek your advice, connect with you, and remember you.

Wrapping up

In today’s digital landscape, an online presence is indispensable.

Social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram offer an excellent opportunity to showcase your personal brand and engage with a broader audience.

Take advantage of these platforms to share your expertise, connect with industry influencers, and contribute to relevant conversations.

By consistently delivering valuable content and insights, you can position yourself as a thought leader in your field.

Personal branding is not about self-promotion but about showcasing your unique value proposition to the world. Embrace your authenticity, be consistent, leverage digital platforms, nurture relationships, and continue to grow and adapt.

Your personal brand will become a powerful catalyst for your career success.
